Endless Summer Style

I’m a born and bred New Yorker and I have a fierce loyalty to the East Coast, but even I can’t deny that surfer style has an undeniable cool factor. In fact, what West Coast menswear lines have been showing recently reaffirms that surfer style doesn’t have to be limited to oversized board shorts and canvas sneakers (although a beat-up pair of Authentics does admittedly look pretty cool with just about anything.)

West coast soul meets East coast design at Saturdays Surf NYC, Warriors of Radness offer beach bum style with some serious attitude, Band of Outsiders has become a bastion of West Coast prep style, and vintage-inspired beach wear can be found at Aviator Nation. All fine choices for assembling a surf-inspired summer wardrobe… though that California surfer/skater swag might be a little harder to come by. At the very least, pick up a great pair of shades and some shrunken-down swim trunks and then hit the beach, dude.

And now, I’ll turn it over to a real West Coast-er. My friend Mickie, director of the womenswear/music/nail art/anything and everything cool blog oh, cool beans and I teamed up to swap some summer looks. Try as I might to fight it, my fashion sensibilities still leaned towards East coast classics (you can check out my assembled look here) but Mickie nails the authentic West Side vibe with ease. Read about the pieces she put together below for a look to see you through the summer months with some California attitude.

There’s nothing more appealing than a guy who can look simultaneously pulled together and a little grunge. There’s a reason everyone thinks surfers and skaters are so cool—their styles have that “I could care less” attitude; it’s a little offbeat yet totally pulled together. We may not all live at the beach, but you can definitely pay homage to their Endless Summer style with a look like this. Sand and surf not included.
